A spotting scope is fundamentally a compact refracting telescope designed for terrestrial viewing. Unlike an astronomical telescope, which often presents an inverted image and is mounted on a heavy equatorial platform, a spotting scope provides an upright, correctly-oriented image and is engineered for portability, durability, and use on lightweight support systems. It is an instrument for seeing detail at distance, with magnifications typically ranging from 15x to 60x, which is significantly more than the 8x or 10x of a pair of binoculars.
Most people encounter spotting scopes in specific contexts: a birder setting one up on a lakeshore to examine a distant waterfowl, a competitive shooter using one from a rest to spot a bullet strike on a steel target at 300 meters, a surveyor or a land-use inspector viewing a hillside to verify a boundary corner, or a deer hunter glassing a field edge from a ridge. These situations share a fundamental requirement: you need to see detail far beyond what binoculars can resolve, and you need to see it clearly enough to make precise identifications or measurements.
