Chapter 1: Understanding Sparklers

The Physical Object

A sparkler is a pyrotechnic device that burns a solid metal-fuel composition on a rigid support. The most common form is a wire core, typically 12 to 14 gauge steel wire, coated with a compound that oxidizes rapidly when ignited at the tip. The wire is bent into a loop at one end for gripping, or left straight for insertion into stands or mounts. The coating itself is a mixture of a metal fuel (aluminum, magnesium, or titanium), an oxidizer (usually potassium nitrate or barium nitrate), a binder (dextrin or a starch-based compound), and a metallic additive (iron or steel filings) that produces the characteristic white-hot sparks.

When you ignite the tip, the oxidizer decomposes and supplies the oxygen needed for the metal fuel to burn at a surface temperature that typically ranges between 800°C and 1500°C, depending on the fuel and the additive. The burning front travels along the coated wire at a rate of roughly 1 to 5 centimeters per second, which means a standard 36-centimeter sparkler will burn for 45 seconds to 2 minutes, depending on the coating density and the specific mix. The visible sparks are actually small globs of the metal additive that are ejected from the burning zone and continue to oxidize in the air, which is why they're bright and why they fall fairly fast - they are solid particles, not embers from paper or wood.
