Socks are engineered products. They are not commodity basics, and they are not interchangeable. A sock is a shaped, typically tubular garment worn on the foot, constructed from fibers or fiber blends that are either knitted or woven into a fabric, then cut, finished, and often cushioned or reinforced in specific zones to perform under specific conditions. What that means in practice is that socks vary significantly in their thermal properties, moisture management, durability, fit, and cost—and these variations matter enormously depending on what you will do while wearing them.
Understanding socks as a category requires understanding how they work: the materials they are made from, the way those materials are assembled, and the physical dynamics of how a sock manages heat and moisture around the foot. These are not theoretical concerns. A cotton sock and a merino wool sock of the same apparent weight and construction will perform completely differently in a 45-degree environment during a six-hour hike. A thin synthetic sock will provide less blister protection than a cushioned variant during a full day on concrete.
