The first thing to understand about snow removal is that it is not a single activity, but a series of decisions and operations driven by the physical properties of snow, the environment where it lands, and the consequences of leaving it in place. The goal is almost never to remove every single snowflake. Instead, the goal is to clear a defined path or surface to a specific standard of safety and usability, and to do so in a way that is efficient, cost-effective, and respects the equipment and the people operating it.

To make practical decisions, you must first understand the material you are working with. Snow is not just a solid white substance; it is a complex mixture of ice crystals, air, and liquid water. The exact ratio of these components dictates its behavior under a plow blade or a blower impeller. Fresh, light snow, often called powder, has a high air content and low density, perhaps around 50 to 100 kilograms per cubic meter. It moves easily and poses little strain on machinery. However, the same snow when it has been compacted by wind or by the wheels of a car, can be several times denser and significantly heavier to move.
