The Function of a Ski

A ski is a load-bearing beam that converts the downward force of a skier's body weight into directional control on a compressible, low-friction surface. At its most basic, it must do three things: support the skier without sinking into the snow, slide forward with manageable resistance, and allow the skier to change direction through controlled edge engagement. The materials, the shape, and the internal structure of the ski are all engineered to these ends. If you understand the purpose of each component and how they work together, you can evaluate any ski on the market, diagnose performance problems, and communicate effectively with customers or manufacturers. The ski's primary contact with the snow is the base, a layer of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, commonly called P-tex. This material is porous enough to hold wax, which reduces friction, and is tough enough to slide over rocks, ice, and debris without shattering. The base is not just a flat sheet - it contains a pattern of small grooves or a structured texture that channels water away from the interface between ski and snow.
