A ski or snowboard helmet is a protective device worn on the head to reduce the risk of injury during falls or collisions on snow. It is composed of three core parts: an outer shell, inner foam padding, and a retention system (chin strap and adjustment mechanisms). Together, these components work to absorb the energy of an impact and keep the helmet in place so the foam stays positioned over the most vulnerable areas of the head and skull.

To understand why this matters, start with the injury mechanism. When a skier or snowboarder falls or collides with another person, an obstacle, or the ground, the head can experience sudden deceleration. If unprotected, this deceleration causes the brain to move within the skull, potentially leading to concussion, contusion, or more severe traumatic brain injury. A helmet's foam layer is engineered to compress during impact, extending the time over which that deceleration occurs. Longer deceleration time means lower peak force on the brainโ€”the fundamental principle of helmet protection across all sports.

The foam used in ski and snowboard helmets is typically expanded polystyrene (EPS), polypropylene (EPP), or a combination of both.
