Chapter 1: Understanding Ski Bindings

The ski binding is the mechanical interface between a skier and their skis. It is also the single most safety-critical component in the entire sport. While skis and boots get the attention, the binding is the device that must hold you firmly to the ski during the forces of a turn, a jump, or a crash, and then, at a precisely calibrated moment, let you go cleanly before your knee or ankle is torn. This is not a simple clamp. It is a precision release mechanism, and to use it properly, you must understand what it is doing and why.

A binding in its most basic form does two things. First, it transmits the forces of the ski to the skierโ€™s leg. When you carve a turn, the ski bends, twists, and resists; that force goes through the binding, through the boot sole, and into your leg. Second, it releases the boot when that force reaches a set threshold. That threshold is not arbitrary. It is set according to industry standards that have been developed over decades to protect the knee, ankle, and tibia from serious injury. The binding is, in effect, a fuse. It is engineered to break the connection at a specific load to save the more expensive and irreplaceable components of the system, namely your bones and ligaments.
