A skateboard is a propelled platform for traveling, turning, and performing tricks on pavement. It consists of four core components: a wooden deck, two metal trucks (axle assemblies), four wheels, and eight bearings that allow the wheels to spin. On its surface, this is simple—closer to a wheeled plank than a complex machine. But understanding how these four parts work together, and why each specification matters, is essential for anyone selecting a board, maintaining one, or advising others.
The deck is a laminated wood construction, typically made from seven to nine plies of maple veneer glued with epoxy or polyester resin. The number of plies affects the board's stiffness and weight; more plies mean greater strength but slightly more mass. The deck's concavity—a subtle curve along its width—helps your feet stay planted during turns and tricks. The nose and tail, the squared-off or rounded ends, affect maneuverability and the types of tricks possible. A street deck might be 8 inches wide and 32 inches long; a cruiser might be 9 inches wide and 27 inches long. These dimensions directly shape what the board can do.
Trucks are the mechanical heart of a skateboard. Each truck consists of a baseplate bolted to the deck, a hanger that holds the axle, and a pivot pin and bushing system that allows the board to turn.
