Chapter 1: Understanding Skateboarding Protective Gear
Skateboarding protective gear exists to do one specific job: reduce the severity of injuries when a skater falls. It does this through two core mechanisms: absorbing the energy of impact and distributing that force across a larger body surface so that the damage concentrates less on a single point. Understanding how this actually works—and why different types of gear exist for different kinds of falls—is the foundation for making intelligent decisions about which protective equipment you need, how to use it correctly, and when to maintain or replace it.
When a skater falls, their body experiences a sudden deceleration. A skater riding at 15 miles per hour who hits concrete has kinetic energy that must go somewhere. Without protection, that energy transfers directly to bone, joints, and soft tissue in whatever part of the body makes contact first. With protective gear, that energy is instead absorbed and distributed across a wider area over a slightly longer time period. The outcome is dramatically different: instead of a fractured wrist from landing on an outstretched hand, a wrist guard spreads that impact across the palm, wrist, and forearm; instead of a direct skull fracture from impact to pavement, a helmet's foam liner absorbs the shock and its hard outer shell distributes force across a larger area of the skull.
