A skateboard truck is the metal assembly that connects a skateboard's deck to its wheels. More precisely, it is the steering and suspension mechanism that allows a rider to turn, balance lateral forces, and absorb impact from the ground. Without understanding what a truck does and why its design matters, you cannot reliably choose the right one for a given rider or situation, diagnose why a truck has failed, or advise a customer on compatibility with their board.

In practical terms, a truck is a lever system. The rider's weight presses down on the deck. The deck rests on the truck. The truck pivots at a single bolt—the kingpin—which is installed at an angle. When the rider leans to the left, that lean creates pressure on one side of the truck's pivot. The truck turns left because the geometry of that pivot point converts vertical pressure into rotational movement. This mechanical relationship between kingpin angle, bushing stiffness, and rider weight determines how responsive a truck will feel and how much force is needed to turn.
