Chapter 1: Understanding Sit-Down Hydrofoils
A sit-down hydrofoil is a towed water sports device consisting of a platform, mast, and submerged wing-like foil structure designed to lift a rider above the water surface during motion. The rider sits on the platform while being towed at speed by a boat; as the boat accelerates, increasing water flow over the foil creates lift that elevates the rider several feet above the surface. Once airborne, the rider experiences reduced drag, smoother motion (fewer chops and bumps), and the ability to sustain flight at lower speeds than a stand-up rider or skier would require. A sit-down hydrofoil is neither a water ski nor a wakeboard, though it evolved from and competes for market share with both.
To understand why sit-down hydrofoils matter, it helps to start with the physics underneath: hydrofoil lift works because of pressure differential across a curved wing surface moving through water. As the foil moves forward, the curved upper surface causes water to flow faster over that side than the lower surface; this speed difference creates lower pressure above and higher pressure below, producing an upward forceโlift. The faster the water flows over the foil, the greater the lift. The larger the foil wing area, the greater the total lift available at any given speed. For a 200-pound rider on a sit-down hydrofoil, the foil wing must generate enough lift at cruising speed to support that weight plus the mass of the platform and mast, typically creating lift forces in
