Chapter 1: Understanding Signal Jammers
A signal jammer is not a mysterious or exotic device. It is a radio transmitter, deliberately built to emit interference on the same frequencies used by the systems you want to disrupt. Like any transmitter, it has an oscillator, an amplifier, and an antenna. The difference is that instead of encoding information on a carrier wave, a jammer radiates noise or deceptive signals to deny communications to receivers in its coverage area. If you already understand the basics of radio, you already understand eighty percent of how a jammer works. What this handbook adds is the practical detail: how the interference actually disrupts different systems, why real-world performance never matches a spec sheet, and how to plan a deployment that does the job without collateral damage.
To think clearly about jamming, you need to understand what is being jammed. A cellular phone, a Wi-Fi router, and a GPS receiver all use different frequencies and different modulation schemes. A GSM phone at 900 MHz uses a time-division technique where the phone and the tower take turns talking. A Wi-Fi network at 2.4 GHz uses a spread-spectrum scheme that hops across a wide channel. A GPS satellite at 1.575 GHz sends a very low-power signal from space, around -130 dBm, carrying precise timing information. These systems fail under interference in different ways. Cellular networks degrade into choppy audio and dropped calls as the error rate climbs. Wi-Fi slows down and eventually disconnects as data retransmissions pile up.
