How Water Actually Flows Through a Shower Head
Water enters a shower head through a threaded connection at the base (typically half-inch female NPT, the standard in North America). This connection is where the shower arm—a rigid pipe extending from the wall—screws into the shower head body. From that connection point, water travels through an internal chamber into a cartridge or flow-control mechanism, then into the spray head itself, where it exits through small holes or slots arranged in a pattern.
The internal cartridge is where the critical work happens. This is a removable component (in most modern shower heads) that contains a mixing valve if hot and cold water are being combined, and it includes a restrictor—a small opening or screen that controls how much water can actually flow
