What Shampoo Actually Is
Shampoo is a cleansing agent designed to remove soil, oils, product buildup, and environmental deposits from the hair shaft and scalp. It accomplishes this task through a specific class of chemicals called surfactants (short for surface-active agents). A surfactant molecule has two chemically distinct ends: one that is hydrophilic (water-loving) and one that is lipophilic (oil-loving). This dual nature allows a single molecule to attach to both oil and water, which ordinary water alone cannot do.
When shampoo is applied to wet hair with mechanical action (massage, friction), surfactant molecules surround particles of oil, sweat, sebum, and product residue. The lipophilic end of the molecule anchors to the oily deposit while the hydrophilic end faces outward toward the water. This creates a microscopic structure called a micelleโan encapsulated package of oil surrounded by water-facing molecules.
