Chapter 1: Understanding Seeds

A seed is a dormant embryo packaged with stored energy and wrapped in a protective coat. Inside that envelope is a compressed plant—root, shoot, cotyledons, and everything needed to establish itself in soil—suspended in a state of biological pause. That pause is not random. It is a finely calibrated adaptation, honed by evolution, that waits for the right combination of temperature, moisture, and light before committing to growth. When you buy a packet or bag of seeds, you are buying dormant organisms, not inert objects. This distinction matters more than most growers realize.

Seeds are living and perishable. A seed's viability—its ability to germinate and produce a normal seedling—declines from the moment it is harvested. The decline is predictable, measurable, and quantifiable, but it is not reversible. A seed that loses viability cannot be revived. This is why seed age, storage conditions, and handling matter so much in practice. Unlike a tool or a chemical formulation, you cannot simply store seeds in a warehouse for five years and expect them to perform the same as they did on day one.
