The scalpel blade is, at its core, a single-use, precision-ground cutting edge mounted on a reusable handle. It is a tool designed to separate soft tissue with minimal damage. This simple definition, however, belies a level of engineering and material science that determines the difference between a clean, controlled incision that heals well and a frayed, traumatic wound that is prone to complications. Understanding what a scalpel blade actually is requires moving beyond the sterile wrapper and examining the steel, the geometry, and the function that all converge into this seemingly simple piece of metal.
First, consider the materials. The vast majority of blades are manufactured from either high-carbon steel or a specific grade of stainless steel, typically 420 or 440A stainless. The choice between these materials is a direct trade-off between edge sharpness and corrosion resistance. High-carbon steel, often referred to as "carbon steel" in clinical settings, can be sharpened to a much finer edge than most stainless alloys. It holds that edge for a shorter time and will corrode rapidly if not dried immediately. This makes it the favored choice for procedures where the first cut must be of the absolute highest precision, such as in ophthalmic surgery or for creating a frozen section in pathology.
