Chapter 1: Understanding Saxophone Reeds

The saxophone reed is a small strip of material, usually cane, clamped to the mouthpiece. It is the engine of the instrument's sound. When you blow air into the mouthpiece, the reed vibrates against the facing—the curved, sloped opening on the mouthpiece—and this rapid, controlled oscillation is what generates the sound wave that travels down the horn. The reed's job is to turn a steady stream of air into an oscillating pressure wave. It's a deceptively simple mechanism, but the interaction between the reed's physical properties, the mouthpiece geometry, and your air stream is complex. Understanding this interaction is the first step to getting a consistent, reliable performance from your saxophone.

Most reeds are made from the cane Arundo donax, a giant perennial grass that grows in specific climates. The best-known growing regions are the Var region of southern France and the Canary Islands, but cane is also cultivated in parts of Argentina, Australia, and the United States. The cane is harvested in the winter after two to three years of growth, when the plant has stored the maximum amount of structural material. It's then cut, split, and dried for a long period—sometimes several years—before it's processed into mouthpiece blanks. This aging process is critical. Freshly harvested cane is too soft and prone to warping; well-aged cane is stable and responds consistently to the tooling that shapes it.
