Saxophone care is the systematic process of controlling the environmental and mechanical factors that degrade the instrument over time. It is not a ritual or a chore reserved for annual overhauls; it is a continuous set of preventative actions designed to maintain the instrument's playability, preserve its material integrity, and ensure its mechanical consistency. For the working professional or serious hobbyist, a well-maintained saxophone is a reliable tool. An ill-maintained one is a source of inconsistent intonation, unpredictable keywork, and costly repair bills that could have been avoided.

To understand what care actually is, we must first understand the environment in which a saxophone lives. When you play, you blow warm, humid air through a mechanism made primarily of brass, steel, and various organic materials such as felt, cork, and leather. A typical performance lasts maybe 45 minutes. During that time, you might pass over a liter of moisture-laden air through the instrument.
