Chapter 1: Understanding Saws

A saw is a tool designed to separate material by forcing a toothed blade, wire, or abrasive surface through it at high speed. That simple definition—toothed blade, forced through material—underpins every saw category you will encounter, from a hand saw you manipulate manually to a 10-kilowatt industrial band saw. Understanding what a saw fundamentally does, and how its mechanical principles work, is essential before choosing, installing, or maintaining one.

At the heart of every saw is a cutting principle: a blade with multiple teeth arranged in a pattern makes contact with material repeatedly, each tooth removing a small amount. The teeth are shaped, spaced, and angled to optimize cutting for specific materials and cut types. When a carpenter uses a hand saw, gravity and arm force push the blade downward through wood. When a circular saw motor spins a blade at 4,000 rpm, the motor's rotational energy drives the teeth through material much faster than any human could manage. In both cases, the saw is working the same way—the only difference is the power source and the speed.

Three physical principles drive how saws work. First, the blade must move through the material at a speed the material can be cut at.
