A saw stand is not a shelf. It is a workholding system, the interface between your body, the tool, and the material. When you break it down to a mechanism, its purpose is singular: to hold the saw bed at the correct angle and height, and to keep it there while you apply force to a workpiece. This sounds simple, but the physics of a crosscut or a rip cut involves forces from several directions: downward from the saw's weight and the pressure you apply, lateral forces when you push a long board, and even lifting forces when you feed a heavy sheet. Any stand that fails to resist these forces introduces error.

Consider a concrete scenario. You are a trim carpenter installing baseboard in a house under renovation. You have a 10-inch sliding compound miter saw on a folding stand that was a mid-range purchase. The floor is a plywood subfloor, slightly uneven by 1/8 inch over a four-foot span. You unlock the stand, set the saw, and push a six-foot length of primed pine toward the blade. The saw has a sliding mechanism, so you pull the head forward and push it down through the work.
