Chapter 1: Understanding Saw Blades

A saw blade is a circular, band, or reciprocating piece of steel or composite material with abrasive or cutting teeth brazed, welded, or formed into its edge. Unlike a wrench or drill bit, a saw blade's job is not to grip, drive, or shape; it is to remove material by abrading or cutting away a narrow line of stock—the kerf—in a controlled, repeatable way. The blade itself is only part of a system: it works in combination with a power tool (circular saw, band saw, cold saw, oscillating saw, or handsaw), a spindle or drive mechanism that rotates or reciprocates it at precise speed, and often a guide or fence that controls the cut path. Understanding what a blade actually does, and why its physical properties matter, is the foundation for selecting the right tool for any job.

The teeth on a saw blade are the working surface. Each tooth is a small wedge designed to cut or fracture material as the blade moves forward into the workpiece. The shape, size, spacing, and material of those teeth determine nearly everything about how the blade performs: cutting speed, finish quality, noise, heat generation, chip removal, and how long before the blade becomes dull and needs resharpening. A blade with 16 teeth per inch (TPI), for example, cuts differently than a 40-TPI blade because fewer, larger teeth engage the material at once, remove larger chips, and generate different heat and vibration than many small teeth cutting tiny
