Sands and soils are not simple. A bucket of "topsoil" from one supplier may compact like clay and drain like concrete, while another sold under the same name absorbs water and settles unevenly. A contractor who orders "fill sand" without specifying particle size will receive material that either bridges over compaction equipment or packs so densely it becomes impermeable. A gardener who amends native soil with incompatible material will spend years fighting poor drainage or nutrient lockup. These are not rare edge cases—they are the baseline reality of working with bulk earth materials.

Understanding sands and soils means understanding their physical and chemical composition, how that composition drives behavior in the field, and why specification and testing matter before a single truck arrives. What Sands and Soils Actually Are

At the most basic level, sands and soils are loose mineral particles—fragments of rock, quartz, feldspar, mica, clay minerals, and other mineral compounds broken down by weathering and erosion. They differ fundamentally in particle size, which is the primary driver of how they behave.

Sand is defined by particle size alone: particles between 0.05 millimeters and 2 millimeters in diameter.
