Sandpaper and sanding sponges are surfaces covered with abrasive particles bonded to a backing material. They work by removing material through mechanical abrasion—the particles cut, scratch, or wear away a surface in a controlled way. This seems simple until you consider that professionals across woodworking, automotive finishing, construction, metalworking, and composite manufacturing rely on these products to prepare surfaces for finishing, refine dimensions to tolerance, remove rust or old coatings, and create specific surface textures. The difference between a well-chosen abrasive and a poor one can determine whether a job finishes on time with minimal waste or becomes a cycle of rework and frustration.
To understand why sandpaper works, start with the basic structure. A sheet of sandpaper consists of three parts: the abrasive particles themselves (minerals such as silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, or garnet), the bond that holds those particles to the backing, and the backing material (typically paper, cloth, or foam).
