Chapter 1: Understanding Safelights
A safelight is a colored light source designed to illuminate a darkroom without exposing light-sensitive photographic materials. Unlike a regular light, which would fog film or paper instantly, a safelight emits only wavelengths of light that the material being used cannot detect—at least not during the brief working periods typical of darkroom processing. This is not magic or mystery; it is applied physics based on how photographic emulsions respond to different colors of light.
To understand why safelights work, you need to understand what makes a photographic material sensitive. Film and photographic paper contain microscopic crystals of silver halide—typically silver bromide or silver chloride—suspended in gelatin. These crystals respond to light by undergoing a chemical change that, once developed, becomes a visible image. But they do not respond to all light equally. Different emulsions are sensitive to different parts of the visible spectrum, and this sensitivity is precisely why safelights exist.
Orthochromatic black-and-white film, for example, is sensitive primarily to blue and green light but relatively insensitive to red light. This is why a red safelight can safely illuminate a darkroom in which orthochromatic film is being handled or processed. The red wavelengths do not trigger a response in the film's silver halide crystals. A photographer working under a red safelight can see what they are doing—loading film, adjusting equipment, mixing chemicals—without fogging the film. Panchromatic black-and-white film, by contrast, is sensitive to all visible wavelengths including red, so a red safelight would fog it immediately.
