The rugby ball is a simple-looking object, but it is a precision instrument with a set of engineering requirements that are stricter than most people realize. The prolate spheroid, the elongated sphere, is a direct consequence of the game's core mechanics: throwing the ball backward, kicking it forward, and catching it while running at full speed.
