A routing tool, at its core, is a machine that spins a cutting bit at high speed to remove material from a workpiece. That simple description undersells what makes routers so indispensable: they are among the most versatile tools in woodworking and manufacturing because the cutting task changes entirely depending on what bit you install, what speed you run, and how you feed the material. A single router can cut grooves, shape edges, hollow cavities, trim laminate, bore holes, carve decorative profiles, and machine production components—tasks that would otherwise require specialized equipment or hand tools. Understanding routing tools means understanding not just the machine itself, but how it becomes a different tool depending on what job you're doing.

The basic principle is straightforward. A router holds a cutting bit in a collet (a tapered socket that grips the bit shank), spins that bit at speeds typically between 8,000 and 30,000 rpm (revolutions per minute), and allows you to guide the spinning bit against the workpiece to cut a specific profile or shape. The material removed—wood, plastic, composite, or soft metals in specialized configurations—exits as chips or dust. That spinning bit generates heat and friction; the faster you spin it and the harder you push, the hotter it gets and the faster it wears. Controlling speed and feed rate (how fast you move the tool across the work) is the primary skill that separates controlled, clean cuts from burned edges, tearout, and ruined workpieces.
