A router table is a stationary woodworking machine that holds a power router inverted beneath a flat work surface, allowing the router bit to protrude upward through a hole in the table. Instead of moving the router over the workpiece (as you would with a handheld router), you move the workpiece against the stationary bit. This simple inversion of the conventional handheld routing technique transforms a portable power tool into a production-grade machine capable of repetitive, precise work at higher volumes and with greater consistency than freehand routing allows.

To understand why this matters, consider a practical example: imagine you need to mill a decorative edge profile on 40 hardwood stair treads. Using a handheld router, you would guide the machine along each tread's edge manually, holding it square, maintaining consistent feed speed, and fighting kickback and vibration—a process that is exhausting, prone to operator variation, and slow. On a router table, you clamp a fence to guide each tread edge-first into the spinning bit, then move the wood past the bit at a consistent speed. The setup takes 15-20 minutes; each tread takes 90-120 seconds. The results are uniform, the operator fatigue is minimal, and the risk of a dangerous catch or dropout is much lower.
