In a professional shop, the router is rarely used as a standalone tool. You do not simply push a bare router across a piece of wood; you use a system. The base is the engine, but the accessories are what transform that spinning motor into a precision jointer, a pattern-cutting duplicator, a joinery-making machine, or a specialized shaping tool. Understanding what a router accessory actually is requires shifting your perspective from a list of parts to a view of the entire tool as a modular system. Every accessory, from the simplest 1/4-inch straight bit to a complex dovetail jig, changes the relationship between the cutter and the workpiece, and your job is to control that relationship.
Consider a simple task: cutting a dado to a specific depth and width. If you want to use a hand-held router, the tool itself moves, and you must control its path. A trim bit with a top-mounted ball bearing is an accessory that solves the path problem; the bearing rides along a straightedge clamped to the work, and the cutter follows exactly. In a router table, the relationship is inverted. The router is fixed upside down, and you push the workpiece past the bit. Here, the critical accessory is often a fence, and the bit's cutting depth and height are set by the table's adjustment mechanism. The bit is the same, but the accessory ecosystem around it changes the entire operation's physics and
