Chapter 1: Understanding Roofing

Roofing is a system, not a product. Most people think of a roof as the visible shingles or panels on top of a house—the thing you see when you look up from the street. In reality, a roof is a layered assembly that must do three critical jobs simultaneously: shed water, withstand wind and weather, and stay structurally sound enough to support its own weight and any loads imposed on it. Each layer has a specific function. Understanding those layers and how they interact is essential to understanding why some roofs last 15 years while others last 50, why installation quality matters as much as material choice, and why a cheap roof often costs far more in repairs and early replacement than a properly chosen and installed one.

The basic structure of a roof sits on top of the building's frame—typically wooden rafters, trusses, or steel joists depending on building type and age. That frame creates a sloped or shaped surface. In residential construction, the slope is usually 4:12 to 12:12 (meaning the roof rises 4 to 12 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run). In commercial buildings, the slope can be nearly flat, as low as 0.5:12. The slope matters because it controls how quickly water runs off. A steeper roof sheds water faster; a shallow roof holds water longer, which increases the risk of leaks if the material or seams fail.
