A rocking chair is a chair mounted on curved or arced runners—called rockers—that sit beneath the legs, allowing the seated person to tilt the chair forward and backward in a smooth, continuous motion. Unlike a stationary chair, which transfers the user's weight straight down to the floor, a rocking chair distributes weight across a curved path, enabling rhythm and momentum. That simple mechanical difference creates a category of furniture with distinct design requirements, failure modes, maintenance needs, and commercial applications.

The physics underlying a rocking chair are straightforward but consequential. When you sit in a rocking chair and shift your weight forward, the front of the rocker contacts the floor first. The curved rocker acts as a lever: your center of gravity moves, the rocker rocks back, and momentum carries you in the opposite direction. The arc of the rocker determines how far you travel in each direction and how quickly you return. A tight, shallow arc creates short, quick rocks; a longer, deeper arc creates slower, larger sweeps.
