Chapter 1: Understanding Robotic Mowers
A robotic mower is a battery-powered, autonomous machine designed to maintain a lawn by cutting grass in frequent, small increments. It is not a remote-controlled mower, and it is not a self-propelled mower that still requires a human to guide it. It is a robot in the same sense as a warehouse automated guided vehicle: it navigates within a bounded area, makes decisions about where to go next based on sensor input and software logic, and returns to a charging station on its own when its energy state requires it. The grass it cuts is not collected and bagged; it is left on the lawn as fine clippings that decompose and return nitrogen to the soil.
The most common misconception, especially among first-time buyers, is that these devices are like robotic vacuum cleaners: they roam randomly until they happen to cover the whole area, and you can simply pick one up and place it on the lawn. A robotic mower is far more constrained by its physical environment and by the need for consistent, even cutting. Grass does not forgive an hour of missed coverage the way a floor tolerates a missed patch of dust. A robotic mower must be installed with a perimeter boundary - either a buried wire emitting a low-frequency signal or, in newer models, a virtual boundary established by satellite positioning or onboard visual mapping.
