What a Rewinder Does

In any tape-based video operation, tape moves in one direction during playback or recording and in the opposite direction during rewind. A rewinder removes the tape from a playback deck or other device and winds it back onto its original supply reel without requiring the deck itself to provide the rewind function. This separation of rewind from the primary equipment serves several practical purposes.

First, it preserves the operational efficiency of the playback or recording device. A broadcast or post-production facility cannot afford to have its decks tied up in rewind operations.
