Chapter 1: Understanding Repeaters & Transceivers
A repeater receives a radio signal on one frequency, amplifies it, and retransmits it on another frequency—usually simultaneously. A transceiver transmits and receives on the same device, but operates on a single frequency at a time. Both are fundamental to wireless communication, yet they solve different problems. To understand when you need a repeater, when a transceiver is enough, and how to make them work together, you need to grasp what each actually does and why the distinction matters in real deployments.
Simplex vs. Duplex: The Foundation
All wireless communication falls into two basic modes: simplex and duplex. In simplex mode, communication travels in one direction at a time. A speaker transmits, then stops. The listener can then respond. Walkie-talkies operate in simplex mode—when you press the push-to-talk button, you transmit; when you release it, you receive. Both parties cannot transmit simultaneously on the same frequency. This works fine for short-range communication over small areas, but simplex has a critical flaw: if two people transmit at the same moment, their signals collide, and neither is clearly heard. Simplex also means coverage depends entirely on the direct line of sight between the two radios, limited by terrain, buildings, and the power output of the portable units involved.
Duplex mode solves this by using two frequencies simultaneously. One frequency carries the transmit signal, the other carries the receive signal. A dispatch center transmits to field units on one frequency while receiving their responses on another. Both
