Chapter 1: Understanding Reamers
A reamer is a rotary cutting tool used to enlarge and finish a hole to a precise diameter and surface finish. That's the technical definition, but it obscures what actually matters: a reamer is one of the few tools in a machine shop where the geometry, material, and setup interact in ways that dramatically affect whether you get a good hole or a mediocre one.
The core challenge is this: a hole that came from a drill—or was cast, forged, or punched—is never quite round, never quite straight, and never quite smooth. A reamer's job is to correct all three problems in a single pass. It does this by removing only a small amount of material (typically 0.005 to 0.125 inches) with multiple cutting edges working in concert. But that cooperative geometry is also what makes reamer performance sensitive to setup, spindle speed, feed rate, and the material being cut. Get any of those wrong, and the reamer either chatters (vibrates, producing a poor surface and tool wear), deflects (produces an out-of-tolerance hole), or simply cuts inefficiently.
Understanding why matters because reamers are often treated as interchangeable. A shop might stock hand reamers for manual finishing, machine reamers for CNC work, adjustable reamers to save cost on specialty sizes, and carbide reamers for production runs—but without understanding the differences in geometry and material, selection becomes guesswork, and troubleshooting becomes trial-and-error. A reamer that works beautifully in aluminum at 600 rpm may chatter violently in cast iron
