Chapter 1: Understanding Range Hoods
A range hood is a mechanical ventilation system designed to capture and remove heat, smoke, grease, and cooking odors from the air directly above a cooking surface, then exhaust them outside the home or building—or, in some cases, filter and recirculate them back into the kitchen. It is not a decorative fixture. It is a functional appliance whose primary job is to remove contamination from the cooking area before it spreads throughout the living space. Whether it does that job effectively depends on its design, its installation, the ductwork connected to it, and how it is maintained.
If you have ever stood in a kitchen after someone has cooked bacon, fried fish, or seared meat, you know the problem a range hood is meant to solve. Without ventilation, cooking smoke, grease vapor, and odors linger in the air, settle on walls and ceilings, absorb into fabrics, and persist for hours or days. In a poorly ventilated or unventilated kitchen, the accumulation is worse: grease builds up on surfaces, cooking smells become the default background odor of the home, and humid air from boiling water condenses on windows and mirrors, promoting mold growth. A properly functioning range hood prevents all of that by actively pulling contaminated air away from the breathing zone and removing it from the space entirely.
The mechanics are straightforward. Inside the hood is a fan—almost always a motor-driven centrifugal or axial blower—that creates negative pressure in the cooking zone. That negative pressure
