A rain gauge is a device that collects and measures precipitation. At its simplest, it is a cylinder or funnel that captures falling rain and allows you to determine how much water fell in a given time period. But simplicity is deceptive. The difference between a well-placed, properly maintained gauge and a poorly positioned one can shift your rainfall measurement by 10, 20, or even 30 percent—enough to make wrong decisions about irrigation, drainage, or hydrological assessment.
Before diving into types, specifications, and installation standards, you need to understand what a rain gauge actually does and why the details matter.
The Basic Principle
Rain falls from clouds as droplets. When these droplets reach the ground, they accumulate in whatever container or surface they strike. A rain gauge is intentionally designed to catch and hold that water long enough for you to measure its depth. The standard unit of measurement is depth in millimeters or inches, not volume. This is important: we measure rainfall as depth because depth is independent of container size. One inch of rain means one inch of water would accumulate in any open container, anywhere within the rainfall area, assuming no evaporation or spillage.
A simple rain gauge at its core is a calibrated cylinder with measurement markings. Water collects inside. You read the depth. That depth tells you how much precipitation fell during the observation period. If your gauge shows 1.2 inches since yesterday's reading, then 1.2 inches of rain
