A projector replacement lamp is a high-intensity discharge (HID) light source sealed inside a glass envelope, designed to produce the intense, focused beam of light that creates an image on a projection screen. It is one of the most expensive and failure-prone components in any projection system, and understanding how it works and why it fails is essential for anyone who depends on projectors in a professional, business, or serious hobbyist context.

In the most basic sense, a projector lamp converts electrical energy into light through a process called gas discharge. Inside the lamp's glass bulb is a small amount of pressurized gas (usually xenon or mercury vapor) and two electrodes separated by a few millimeters. When high-voltage electrical current is applied across those electrodes, the gas ionizes and forms a plasma—a superheated, luminous column of ionized gas that emits light across a broad spectrum. This light is then collected by reflective optics (mirrors or elliptical reflectors) behind the lamp, focused through the projector's lens system, and directed onto the screen.

The word "high-intensity" is not marketing language. A typical projector lamp burns at 3,000 to 10,000 Kelvin—hotter than the surface of many stars—and produces light intensity measured in thousands of lumens in a space smaller than a grain of rice.
