Chapter 1: Understanding Projection Screens
A projection screen is a surface engineered to reflect or diffuse projected light with controlled directional properties and measured brightness characteristics. It is not simply a white wall or sheet. The difference between a poorly chosen screen and one matched correctly to your projector, room, and viewing geometry can degrade brightness by 50 percent, shift color balance, create hot spotting (a bright center with dimmer edges), or restrict the usable viewing angle to an unusably narrow cone. Yet projection screens receive little technical attention compared to projectors or AV receivers, and most selection decisions are driven by price or aesthetics rather than optical performance.
Understanding how a projection screen works requires understanding what it actually does to light. When a projector emits light, that light must reach your eye with sufficient brightness, correct color, and uniform coverage across the entire screen image. A projection screen controls how light is reflected or diffused by varying its material properties—the chemical composition of its surface, its texture, its backing, and sometimes its construction as multiple layers. These properties determine how much light bounces back to the audience, in which directions that light travels, and how the image appears from different viewing positions and angles.
How Projection Screens Work: Gain and Reflectance
The single most important specification of a projection screen is its gain. Gain is a measure of how much light the screen reflects compared to a standard reference surface—specifically, a perfectly diffuse white surface called magnesium
