Imagine a hundred-mile-per-hour baseball thrown against a flimsy backyard net. The ball hits, the net bulges, the frame shudders, and the ball drops to the ground. Now imagine a professional batting cage. The ball is thrown at the same speed, hits a heavier, taut net, and drops dead at the batter's feet. The difference between these two scenes is the difference between a cheap piece of sporting goods and a piece of professional infrastructure. A practice net or screen is, at its most basic level, a barrier designed to stop, redirect, or contain projectiles during athletic training. But that simple definition hides a surprising amount of engineering. It is not a wall. It is a flexible membrane that absorbs kinetic energy and dissipates it safely. When a ball hits a net, the impact stretches the fibers and knots or welds of the mesh. That stretching converts the ball's kinetic energy into elastic potential energy in the twine. If the net is strong enough and its frame is solid, the ball will eventually stop and fall. If the net is too weak, the fiber stretches past its breaking point. The fibers snap, or worse, the frame collapses under the strain of the rebound.
