The Box Around the Power

A power supply enclosure is the physical boundary between the raw, dangerous energy inside your equipment and the people and environment around it. It is a box, yes, but that simple definition belies its complexity. The enclosure must simultaneously do three jobs that often conflict with each other: keep you alive, keep the electronics cool, and keep the outside world from ruining the electronics. Getting any one of these wrong can lead to downtime, damaged property, or a serious safety incident.

Consider a typical industrial example. A factory has a motor control cabinet on the plant floor. Inside that cabinet is a 24V DC power supply that runs a PLC and a few sensors. The cabinet is not just a convenient shelf. It is rated to a specific Ingress Protection (IP) code, meaning it keeps out the airborne cement dust. It has a fan and filter on the door to pull in cool air. The steel of the cabinet is bonded to ground, so if a live wire inside touches the chassis, the circuit breaker trips and no one gets hurt. The enclosure is the most critical safety component in that entire system, far more important than the power supply chip itself.
