A power strip is a cable with multiple electrical outlets at one end and a plug at the other. A surge suppressor is a power strip with built-in protection circuitry designed to limit voltage spikes. These sound like simple products, and their physical form is simple—but their actual function, protective capability, and failure modes are often misunderstood by the people relying on them to protect valuable equipment.
The distinction matters immediately. A basic power strip is fundamentally a distribution device: it takes one wall outlet and turns it into three, four, six, or more outlets so you can plug in multiple devices simultaneously. It has no protective function. If an electrical surge hits the wall outlet, the surge flows through the power strip directly to every device plugged into it. Basic power strips have been commodity items for decades, and their core design has barely changed—they work reliably for decades in normal conditions, but they offer zero protection against electrical transients.
A surge suppressor, by contrast, actively monitors the voltage flowing through it and responds to abnormal spikes by diverting excess current away from your equipment. The core protection component is usually a Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV), a semiconductor that behaves like a variable resistor: under normal voltage, it has extremely high resistance and lets current pass through normally, but when voltage exceeds a threshold, its resistance drops dramatically and it absorbs excess current, directing it to ground instead of to your
