A power outlet or socket is a mechanical interface that allows electrical current to flow from a building's wiring system into a plug-connected device. In practice, it is one of the most fundamental and least understood components of electrical infrastructure. Most people treat outlets and sockets as generic, interchangeable receptacles—plug in a device and move on. In reality, outlet and socket design encodes critical decisions about voltage, current capacity, grounding, safety mechanisms, and durability that directly affect equipment protection, user safety, and operational reliability.
To understand why this matters, start with what a power outlet actually does. Inside the outlet is a set of metal contacts (called terminals) that make physical contact with the prongs of a plug. When a plug is inserted into an outlet, those terminals create a circuit that allows current to flow from the building's electrical panel, through the wiring, into the device, and back to the panel. The design of the outlet—where the terminals sit, how tightly they grip the plug prongs, their material, and their electrical rating—determines whether that connection is safe, stable, and appropriate for the power demand of the device being plugged in.
