Chapter 1: Understanding Pool & Spa Filters

A pool or spa filter has one job: remove particles and contaminants from circulating water so that the water stays clear, safe, and usable. That's it. Yet many pool owners, service professionals, and even facility managers treat filters as afterthoughts—something to "backwash when the gauge gets high" without understanding what they're actually doing, why it matters, or what happens when filters fail.

This chapter establishes what a filter is, how it works at a mechanical level, and why filter selection and maintenance directly affect water quality, chemical efficiency, equipment lifespan, and your bottom line as a professional or facility operator.

What Filters Do

Water in a pool or spa contains particles: dead skin cells, hair, dust, pollen, algae cells, bacteria, mineral deposits, and chemical precipitates. Without mechanical removal, these particles either cloud the water (making it visibly dirty) or accumulate in plumbing, on equipment surfaces, and in the water column, where they interfere with chemical treatment and create conditions for bacterial growth. A filter traps these particles on or within a porous media—sand, cellulose fibers, or diatomaceous earth—so that only clean water returns to the pool.

The process is called mechanical filtration, and it is non-negotiable for any pool or spa. No amount of chlorine or algaecide can do the work of a filter. Chemical sanitizers kill microorganisms and oxidize some organic compounds, but they cannot remove suspended solids. A filter removes solids; chemicals kill pathogens and oxidize contaminants. Both are required.
