A pond is a water system. It has a pump, a filter, a surface area, a depth, a volume measured in gallons, and a predictable cycle of water movement and biological processes. It will accumulate waste. It will develop algae. It will leak or fail if built incorrectly. It will become unbalanced if maintained poorly. Understanding how these systems actually work—not how they appear in photos or marketing materials—is the foundation for every decision that follows: whether to build one, what type to choose, how to size it, how to install it, and how to keep it running without expensive surprises.
What a Pond Actually Does
A pond holds water in a contained space and maintains it in a condition suitable for fish, plants, or both. That sounds simple. But the actual work is chemical and biological. Every gallon of water in a pond accumulates debris—leaves, fish waste, dead plant matter, uneaten food. That debris decays. Decaying matter consumes oxygen and creates compounds (chiefly ammonia and nitrite) that are toxic to fish at concentrations as low as 0.5 parts per million. The pond's job is to remove that waste before it accumulates to toxic levels.
This is why every functional pond has a pump and filter. The pump circulates water continuously through a mechanical filter, which traps solid waste.
