The pole vault pit is not a single cushion. It is a precision landing system, engineered to absorb kinetic energy and compress in a controlled way. When a vaulter clears the bar and falls from a height of five meters or more, they are not hitting foam; they are interacting with a machine designed to stop their descent without causing a rebound or a bottoming-out effect. To treat it as a simple mattress is to misunderstand the physics of the event and to potentially compromise the safety of your athletes. The pit is the last line of defense in a discipline that regularly subjects its participants to forces comparable to a mid-speed car crash.

Understanding the pit begins with understanding the jump itself. Consider a vaulter attempting a five-meter clearance. Their center of mass is likely rising above the bar and their body is rotating over the crossbar. When they fall, they are not falling straight down. They often land on their back, shoulders, or head, frequently with a horizontal velocity component as their body passes the plane of the box. A well-designed pit must therefore handle both the vertical drop and the lateral movement along the runway axis. It must also present a forgiving surface at the front edge, where the vaulter's legs and arms may strike at an angle.
