Chapter 1: Understanding Plumbing

Plumbing is not decoration or convenience—it is infrastructure, as essential to a building as the foundation and electrical system. A plumbing system carries potable (drinking) water under pressure into a building, heats it, moves it to fixtures where it is used, collects waste and drainage water, and carries it safely away to a municipal sewer system, septic tank, or treatment facility. That journey involves gravity, pressure, venting, and separation: clean water flows one direction under pressure; waste flows another under gravity, joined by air to prevent traps from being siphoned dry and sewage gases from backing up into the building. When plumbing works, it is invisible—water arrives hot or cold on demand, drains disappear, and no one thinks about it. When it fails, a single rupture can flood a basement, a clogged vent line can cause a trap to overflow, a cross-connection can contaminate drinking water, or a corroded main line can leave an entire building without service for days.

Understanding plumbing means understanding this system as an interconnected set of functional requirements. The system is not one thing; it is three separate but dependent subsystems that share a building's walls, crawlspace, and foundation. Confusing them or breaking the separation between them is the most common source of plumbing failure, code violation, and cost overrun.
