What a Plumbing Trap Is
A plumbing trap is a U-shaped or S-shaped section of pipe installed below or within a plumbing fixture—sink, toilet, shower, floor drain—that holds a standing body of water. That water is called the trap seal. It blocks sewer gases, insects, and odors from flowing backward through the drain into the building. In a typical home or commercial building, there are a dozen or more traps: under the kitchen sink, bathroom sink, shower pan, washing machine drain pan, floor drains in basements or mechanical rooms, and inside every toilet tank. They are among the most inexpensive and most critical drain components in any plumbing system.
The trap is not a filter. It does not store sediment or trap debris—that is not its purpose, though it often does collect hair, grease, and lint as a side effect. The trap exists to maintain a physical barrier: a column of water that prevents backward flow of gases and contamination. When that water seal is broken or lost, the trap ceases to function. When a trap is installed incorrectly, sized wrong, or vented improperly, it either fails to trap gases or it becomes a source of slow drains and drainage problems.
For a plumber, contractor, or serious DIYer, understanding traps means the difference between specifying a drain system that works reliably for decades and creating a system that generates callbacks, code violations, and customer complaints.
