Chapter 1: Understanding Plumbing Pipes
Plumbing pipes are not a single product. They are a critical infrastructure component that moves water under pressure into a building and removes wastewater and sewage out. That simple description masks complexity: different materials behave differently under temperature extremes, different pressures, different water chemistry, and different installation conditions. A pipe that works perfectly for cold water supply might fail catastrophically for hot water. A material that is ideal in one climate can corrode rapidly in another. The economic and practical consequences of choosing wrong are substantial—a failed pipe means water damage, property loss, code violations, liability exposure, and emergency repair costs that dwarf the original material savings.
To understand plumbing pipes, you need to understand the systems they serve. Every building has at least three separate pipe networks: the potable water supply (cold water under pressure, typically 40-80 PSI), the hot water supply (heated water under pressure, typically 40-80 PSI at lower temperature than supply pressure might allow), and the drainage and waste system (unpressurized, gravity-fed, vented to atmosphere). These three systems have fundamentally different requirements. Supply pipes must hold pressure, resist corrosion from water chemistry, and maintain water quality. Drainage pipes must slope properly for gravity flow, resist blockage and root intrusion, and handle temperature spikes from dishwashers and washing machines. Hot water pipes must tolerate sustained temperature that would weaken some materials. Understanding which pipe is appropriate for which system is the first step toward making a choice that will last.
