A plumbing hose or supply line is a flexible or semi-rigid tube designed to carry water (and sometimes waste or drainage) under controlled conditions from a source to an endpoint. That simple definition masks a critical fact: not all hoses are equivalent, and the wrong choice causes leaks, bursting, corrosion, or code violations—often within months of installation.

In everyday practice, plumbing hoses and supply lines fall into two broad categories: supply lines that deliver pressurized water to fixtures, appliances, and outlets, and drain hoses that move waste water away from sinks, washing machines, dishwashers, and other appliances. A supply line must withstand pressure (typically 40 to 80 pounds per square inch, or PSI, in residential systems); a drain hose does not, but it must resist corrosion from waste water and temperature swings. The materials, construction methods, and performance requirements differ fundamentally between the two.

Understanding why this distinction matters starts with the physics of water delivery. Municipal water enters your building under pressure—that pressure is what makes water flow from a tap or fill a toilet tank without a pump. A supply line must contain that pressure safely; failure means a leak that wastes water, damages walls or floors, or creates mold. Drain hoses, by contrast, move water downhill by gravity; they see little to no pressure, but they do encounter temperature extremes (hot water from dishwashers or washing machines) and corrosive substances (detergents, acids from decomposing material).
