Chapter 1: Understanding Plumbing Flanges

A plumbing flange is a load-bearing connector—a bolted joint that creates a water-tight (or pressure-tight) seal between two sections of pipe or between a pipe and a tank, valve, or fixture. It is not a valve, not a fitting in the traditional sense, and not something decorative. It is structural. It must hold back pressure—often significant pressure—across a gasket interface under varying temperatures, and it does so by clamping force alone.

This distinction matters immediately. A pipe coupling or elbow changes the direction or size of a pipe run. A flange terminates a pipe or connects two pipes in a way that allows them to be bolted together and unbolted later without cutting, welding, or threading. The bolts are doing the real work. The flange is the plate that distributes the clamping force evenly across the gasket so that the seal doesn't fail.

How a Flange Creates and Maintains a Seal

Imagine a thin rubber gasket sitting between two flat metal plates. If you just lay the gasket there and push the plates together by hand, water flows around the edges immediately. Now bolt the plates down hard—tightening each bolt in a precise sequence, distributing the clamping force equally all the way around. The gasket compresses and conforms to micro-irregularities in the metal surfaces. A seal forms.
